The Loss of a Legend

Tsutomu Yamaguchi known by friends as "Lucky"

Back in the summer of 1945, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a Nagaski Japan native, was on business in Hiroshima Japan. It had been a three month long trip by the time the morning of August 6th rolled around, and Yamaguchi was eager to put the finishing touches on his trip by visiting the shipyard he had been dealing with one final time - he was to return to his native Nagasaki just a day later. Yamaguchi would make it to the shipyard, and eventually home, but the story involving that is what truly makes this man amazing.

History buffs have likely already caught onto where this story is going already. But the good spirited Yamaguchi describes in a 2005 interview clearly remembering the morning, a nice summer day, nothing necessarily out of the ordinary, at least of course until he heard a single plane flying overhead.

This plane of course was the B-29 Bomber Enola Gay piloted by a young Colonel Paul Tibbets. The payload was "Little Boy" the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Yamaguchi's story does not however end here. As the resilient man survived the first bomb, of course deciding to high tail it out of Hiroshima as fast as possible. And where else would he go, but home to Nagasaki, where he would fall victim to and survive the second atomic bomb blast. That's right, one man, two atomic bombs, zero deaths.

Yamaguchi would go on to live a very long life, he did however pass away just a few days ago on January 4th, at the age of 93. It was stomach cancer that finally brought the old man down, although he had sworn off both drinking and smoking at age 50. He is the only documented survivor of both of the atomic bomb drops on Japan, attacks that killed about 260,000 people in total. In 2006 Yamaguchi took it upon himself as the only living witness to both of these attacks to go before the UN and speak out against nuclear arms, feeling that well into his twilight it was still his responsibility to pass on what he knew to the people of the world.

And why exactly did he feel that way? Having not known or never having met the man I can't say for sure, but this quote from last year might shine some light onto his reasoning,

"I could have died on either of those days. Everything that follows is a bonus."

Farewell Tsutomu Yamaguchi, Bonus Time and man itself have truly lost one of our champions.

PCP & You!

FRIDAY

Two video posts in a row? Yeah well, these are all pretty frikken hilarious. And how do these videos relate to Bonus Time? Don't do the shit you see in these videos during Bonus Time!

Very pleasant music, and I have to say I was a fan of both the tribal dance the man was doing in the beginning, and the look of wonderment and joy when he found himself immune to the traffic he was dancing through! The onlooker in the truck who ALMOST turned left, but then decided to do a U-Turn instead wins good samaritan of the year award in my book.

I guess I'd get naked if I were bleeding that much too, I mean why not, right? The highlight of this video I think was the hole this gentleman punched in the fence. Not only is there some monster force behind that hit, but it's arguable that had he punched a second, or even slightly wider hole that he would have gotten through that fence. I bet that lady cop is pretty glad he didn't turn his sights on her.

This one is the grand finale, and I think you'll agree I saved the best for last. From the humble beginning of the officer fumbling with embarrassment as he explains the situation to the the cameraman, to the stand off itself this video is second to none. Questions to ask yourself when viewing include:

  • Do all of the lights on in this school imply children are present in some kind of afterschool activity?
  • None of his clothing is seemingly present, did this man leave the house nude?
  • A school, really?
  • The fire extinguishers, did you really need ALL of those fire extinguishers?
I'm going to cheat and tell you that the answers to all of these questions are an emphatic yes, but I'm sure you had realized that by now already. I hope you've enjoyed these wonderful videos, Happy Friday!

Yes.

I am the law.

The other day a guy dressed as Colonel Sanders from KFC snuck into the United Nations headquarters in New York. It sounds pretty ridiculous, but it's true. And he didn't just sneak in and nab a free tour, he got into several restricted areas, and was even able to take a picture in the general assembly hall, and with the UN president guy.

The whole thing turned out to be a publicity stunt by KFC, apparently the Colonel also submitted a letter asking the UN to recognize the "Grilled Nation" behind KFCs new grilled chicken. I'm gonna stop for just a minute here.

Fuck KFC grilled chicken. If you're going to KFC, you know what you're doing. You're cramming fat down your throat at an alarming rate, and you're more than likely loving it. I eat KFC every so often, (I usually don't eat for a solid day after to even things out) I'm not saying it's bad. But the whole "we have healthy food now" thing is bullshit. Who are you trying to kid? Fat assholes in this stupid country are just gonna end up ordering Grilled Chicken, but with a side of fried chicken skin. And then they're just gonna fill up on the skin!

Anyway.... the UN acknowledges the event took place, and that there was a lapse in security. Good to see that an organization that is supposedly policing the world can be broken into by a guy dressed in a ridiculous costume and a dude with a camera. Although it would probably be scarier if the UN had actually let the guy in, and they were in the pocket of a fast food chain.

Anyway, the moral of the story is to eat fried chikin cuz its gud.

Teen Burgular Finding Amazing Ways to Spend Bonus Time

Edit: Bonus Time Scientist Rachel has deducted that Colt is actually a CIA Agent on the run, and that this CNN article is a smear campaign. That's fucking science for you. Keep on runnin' Colt.

Someone in Washington state is stealing planes and crashing them for fun. Police aren't 100% sure who has been stealing planes, flying them around, then crashing them and walking away seemingly unscathed, but they've got a good idea.

Police believe an 18 year old named Colton Harris Moore is the culprit. Colton, or "Colt" as he is known as, has a long criminal history dating back to when he was 12 and broke into his school. The young man has since then lived on his own, apparently squatting in houses that are unoccupied at the time, or simply living out in the woods on his own. He has known to steal cars, boats, and homes. One of his favorite things to steal from homes is credit card information, which he uses to buy digital cameras, police scanners, and video games.

Now police believe he has moved onto these crimes, which are a big step up from theft and squatting. While they don't have any solid evidence quite yet, police believe vomit found in one of the crashed planes may prove to be his. They also feel that the crimes fit his 'profile' describing him as a 'feral child.'

This article has more information about him, and it's a hell of a read. Apparently the kid's almost been caught a few times, and has dove from cars to evade police, island hopped around Washington, and one time when he was actually caught he simply walked away from a juvenile detention facility he was being kept in.

Colton we here at Bonus Time salute you, not just because you seem to be bat shit nuts, but because you're living your Bonus Time to the fullest. Going around and committing such hilarious crimes as stealing credit cards for video games, and crashing planes for fun is great. Keep it up Colt, and just hope that next time the police catch up to you, they don't put you somewhere with a fence.

Moon Maybe Has Water

Photo from Bonus Times trip to the Moon.

First I'd just like to say yes, Bonus Time has been on the moon. That is one of the pictures from our trip there, and yes it was amazing.

Secondly, it looks like there might actually be water on the moon, as opposed to the commonly accepted theory that the moon was made entirely out of cheese.

Scientists aren't 100% sure about this yet (and they way they're planning to figure it out is fucking awesome, but more on that later) but at the very least the ingredients to make water appear to be scattered across the moons surface.

According to this article the only question now is whether or not this is actual water they're finding, or hydroxyl (which can be bound with hydrogen to make water). The big problem that's in the way is that these molecules are bound to other molecules all across the surface of the moon, and because of that there's simply not a lot of them. It is possible however that with a little effort this could become a renewable source of water on the moon which would, "
reduce the payloads that would need to be taken into space to maintain a future lunar outpost."

Moon Base One online.

Now how scientists determine whether or not these are actual water molecules, or hydroxyl is pretty awesome. Their plan? Smashing a probe into the moon.

I'm serious, that's what they're gonna do.

Sometimes scientists really seem to get shit right, and wanton destruction always gets a thumbs up here at Bonus Time. Their plan is to send a plume of the moon's surface into space so that they can study it in better light, and that's a hell of a way to go about it.

Anyway all of this is just dripping with Bonus Time awesomeness, I call having the first moon pool party. You all heard me call it, I have witnesses.

Gross

Discovering some kind of weird unidentifiable creature, and then stoning it to death? Not too shabby, a big tip of the hat to the youth of Panama on this one. I think it's a sloth, a sloth from HELL.

Bonus Time Winners

Today we have a special honorary hero of Bonus Time. Whoever the guy is calling 9/11 in this video is amazing.

Well he was trying to enjoy his Bonus Time, so he gets points for effort right?
